Pipework can be a potential source of Heat and Financial loss.
The thicknesses of thermal pipe insulation used for saving energy can vary, but as a general rule pipes operating at lower external temperatures show a greater heat loss. So, by simply applying quality insulation to these pipes you immediately benefit from energy saving, that's real cash!
It’s not advisable to insulate these pipes with the cheaper types of pipe insulation; it pays to invest in decent quality material since the additional cost is outweighed by the energy savings, especially on long pipe runs.
Below are some examples of how poor or no insulation on both pipework, valves & flanges can effect the cash you could lose every year in waste!
Example 1 – Pipework Heat Loss
This example looks at the monetary loss with pipework each year if not insulated correctly.
So, on a 32mm bore operating at 60c over a 600m length of pipe (un-insulated). With a running time each day of 8hrs (260 days a year). We have also assumed the energy tariff to be 0.05pkWh.
From the above we can estimate the following loss of Heat and Money
- Heat Loss - 87,360kW per year
- Cash Loss – c£4,300 per year
Remember: badly insulated or old ineffective insulation can also have the same effect!
Example 2 – Valve & Flange Heat Loss
In this example we look at the monetary loss created by Valves & Flanges each year if not insulated correctly.
We have assuming an average heat loss value of 998 W/m, with a running time of 8hrs a day (260 days a year). Also, the energy tariff is 0.05pkWh and has No:3 valves & No:2 flanges (un-insulated) installed.
From the above we can estimate the following Heat & Money loss.
- Heat Loss – 8,303 kW per year
- Cash Loss – c£415 per year
